Class of 1964

Karen Pika
(Lake)

What are you doing these days?
What are you doing these days? I took early retirement from GTE (now Verizion) in 1991 and then went back to school to earn my teaching credential.  I taught for four years in California before moving to Utah in 2000 where we built a log home.  Since then I have had to be content with subbing.  I also write a column for the local newspaper (yes, people in Utah do know how to read!)  We are glad to have escaped the rattus urbanus (rat race) that we were caught up in for so many years as we both enjoy the outdoors. My husband and I like to hike the red dust and the burnt cliffs of Southern Utah.  We also have been known to partake of an occasional glass of wine and a beer to watch the spectacular unobstructed sunsets from our back deck.  Life has been good to us.

Tell us about your children.
Cookie, is a springer spaniel age 12; Gypsie, the LA dog with an ATTITUDE, is 4:  Bruce, the golden retriever, is about 4 as is Danny the, Britney spaniel.  These last two adopted US shortly after our arrival in Utah.  Whiskie, the cat, rules the roost.

Highlights of the past 40 years.
Obtaining my bachelor's at age 50 and my master's at age 52.  It was grueling but somehow I survived.  My father's sudden passing in 1989 was traumatic.  He was my hero. Moving to Utah has its downsides, however.  The winters are COLD and long so we visit friends and family in the desert for as long as they can put up with us.  Oh, yeah the liquor laws in Utah are archaic and draconian.

Words of Wisdom to Impart?
"I still find each day too short for all the thoughts I want to think, all the walks I want to take, all the books I want to read, and all the friends I want to see." John Burroughs

Your funniest memory(s)while at PSHS.
Bill Karr almost lighting my fuzzie pink sweater on fire in Spanish class as Senor Hess looked on in disgust.

General Unloading Done Here.  Your choice of subject(s).
If my husband, David and I would have had any children, they could proclaim they were from a "mixed" marriage.  He is a Republican who believes Charelton Heston is his president. I, on the other hand, am an iconclast from the 1960's.  It would be an understatement to say that our political conversations are less than stimulating.
